Army of the Tennessee papers, 1863.

Papers consist of a letter and two military orders associated with the Army of the Tennessee (U.S.). Writing from the headquarters of U.S. Forces in Natchez, Miss., to Leutenant Colonel W.T. Clark of the 17th Army Corps, General Thomas E.G. Ransom comments on overcrowded conditions at Natchez, where a number of former slaves have fled from their masters to seek shelter and protection in the city. Ransom tells of attempts to send some of the escaped slaves back to their masters, the necessity of keeping those that have remained in corrals in the city, and fears among the white citizenry that an epidemic will result from the overcrowding. The two orders are written by Brigadier General Isaac F. Quinby to Brigadier General L.F. Ross and concern troop movements in the Yazoo Expedition during the Vicksburg campaign.
